For My Girls

For My Girls

Truly, for MY girls. For the two little ladies I’m fumbling in raising. Hoping that with every word I say and every complex decision I struggle to make, I’m helping them feel empowered and strong and capable. Because the world doesn’t always reflect our worth back to us. Where value is questionably measured often with a double-standard and even more frequently using irrelevant criteria. Sadly, so many of us take this feedback and make it our truth, internalizing what’s projected onto us. I don’t want my girls to feel as though they need to be evaluated in unrealistic ways. I promised them, before they even existed in fact, that their worth is unconditional. It isn’t dependent on what they can do for others, not for how they look or how much they are liked, but for the depth of the person that they are. I’ve since taught them that they sure can do anything they would like to. At five and seven, they let me know in different ways that they have a good sense of what that means. And we celebrate that freedom. We celebrate it often in the fun we have and the creativities we explore. My hope is that their strong sense of selves will keep them safe and interested and motivated and inspired to become whomever they choose to be as they grow into young women and always. This is my underlying wish for my girls, a solid healthy sense of self as the grounding foundation for whatever follows.

So today, International Women’s Day, seems the perfect time to share about a toy company we feel very passionate about. Goldieblox came into our home about two years ago and with it brought fun, thoughtfulness, and a very positive message. Created by a female engineer, Goldieblox sets are beautifully aesthetic and equally thought-provoking. Each set has its own theme, complete with a story and a cast of adorable characters, intended to spark an interest in young minds about how things work. My littles take turns building and re-building so that they can independently orchestrate the scene. Their pride upon completion is tangible as they show-off the finished working moving structure. We own three kits and are fiercely desiring the new builder’s survival kit as well as the zipline action figure. It’s not every day a positive toy with a positive message floats into town! Gold star for Goldie! So grateful you could #makeithappen
